California State University Los Angeles’ (CSULA) South Village (aka Student Housing East) is a LEED Silver Certified student housing project designed to enhance student engagement and matriculation. The 8-story building features 1,500 freshman beds, small community floors, and shared common spaces for living and learning. The village concept of "neighborhoods" creates a strong residential community with amenities such as cafeteria dining, a convenience store, study and lounge spaces, a fitness center, administrative and student life offices, classrooms, and faculty/staff apartments. The project utilizes natural daylight in common areas and offers long-range views from all rooms. South Village has been recognized for its design and construction excellence, receiving awards from the DBIA and CMAA.
The Zero Envy team provided iterative energy modeling, starting with a life cycle cost analysis of central plant options at the pursuit stage. The project was ultimately was served by bringing chilled water piping from the recently completed central plant. The project utilizes demand-based, variable-speed kitchen exhaust systems
